Unwind in paradise, refuel for adventure
History
In the mid 20th Century, sleepy Andros was home to 5,000 fishermen, basket weavers, and subsistence farmers, scattered along a handful of coastal settlements. The island’s backwater somnolence broken up only by the 1950’s arrival of The Andros Yacht Club and its glamorous neighbour the Lighthouse Club: a ritzy development financed by Swedish industrialist, Axel Wenner-Gren.
History
Having made his fortune with the Electrolux vacuum-cleaner company—as well as the Bofors munitions factory that produced munitions for the Reich—Wenner-Gren relocated to the islands in ‘42 to avoid war and taxes, arriving aboard the Southern Cross, a palatial 320-foot yacht he’d purchased from Howard Hughes. Having set himself up in the islands; the millionaire Swede was swiftly taken up by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the bored governing royals who exiled to Nassau, were thrilled to welcome Wenner-Gren: A kindred spirit who came handily equipped with the world’s largest private luxury liner.
History
Meanwhile, with plans to develop a Shangri-La for the sun-seeking super rich, Wenner-Gren purchased 100,000 acres in Fresh Creek, Andros. Completed in the the early ‘50s, The Andros Yacht Club and the Lighthouse Club drew sailboats and seaplanes full of swells over from Nassau and Florida, with the Rat Pack performing at the Club, Esther Williams sipped cocktails by the pool, Ernest Hemingway telling stories at the bar and Joe Carstairs, Marlene Dietrich and a roster of glitterati clearing tabs with thousand dollar bills. Slim Aarons captured the jet-set for Holiday Magazine and social columnist Nancy Randolph wrote in 1955 “the World is witnessing a socially historic struggle between Palm Beach and Andros. The aim to capture important persons from New York to attend competing events”, “the Lighthouse Club truly is a gem to behold - that’s as bewitching as anything this side of Tahiti”.
